"Pope's-Beer" (Papst-Bier): A toast to the pontiff

The idea for this came from Fritz Weideneder in his sleep – New label is being printed – Inquiries from Japan and Australia

To celebrate the election of the new Pope Benedikt XVI. the Weideneder Brewery has produced a “Papst-Bier” [“Pope’s Beer”] in record time. The idea for this came to Fritz Weideneder (the managing director of the brewery) in his sleep. Only 19 hours after the election he poured out free beer and the new Papst-Bier in Marktl, the birthplace of the new pope.

The Papst-Bier also went down well among journalists. Pictures of his Papst-Bier bottles flickered across the screens throughout the world. It’s no wonder that e-mail inquiries from private individuals – even from Australia and Japan – arrived. "I did not reckon with such a demand", said Fritz Weideneder. "We will include the Papst-Bier in our assortment and it will be available with us in ca. 3 weeks."

The Pope's-Beer (Papst-Bier) from Tann now also has the blessing of the Church

60 hectolitre brew receives the blessing within the scope of the celebration for the 200-year anniversary of the parish church – Beverage markets will now also be supplied.

“We will include the Papst-Bier in our assortment and it will be available with us in ca. 3 weeks.” Fritz Weideneder, managing director of the Weideneder Brewery, made this promise on 25 April — and he’s kept it! The delivery of the coveted Papst-Bier has commenced.

Special high-quality malt is utilised with the Papst-Bier. And so the Papst-Bier is not quite so dry and is finer, with a lighter colour, explain the brewing entrepreneur and his brewer Martin Michael.

A 60 hectolitre concoction of the Papst-Bier also received an ecclesiastical benediction for the celebration of the “200-year anniversary of the Tann Parish Church”. The label of the Papst-Bier bottle depicts the house where Benedikt XVI was born in Marktl, and the following text is inscribed on the back: “Dedicated to the great son of our homeland, PAPST BENEDIKT XVI, born in Marktl am Inn in Bavaria.”

TV-SHOW FROM 12/04/2005, ZDF

Summary of the broadcasting

zeitung07

"A cardinal always has to take the first sip to the health of the pope. Then he could drink to the health of the whole hierarchy downwards to the servers!" -

Just said it - and drank the glass of Pope’s beer at one go!

Johannes B. Kerner made a joke, that a cold beer would even be much better, but you cannot see on TV whether a beer is cold or not.

A cup of Pope’s beer always has the taste.
